CHAPTER 17

The former town of Edge Creek was located south of town, just off the highway and along a still-operating rail line. By day, it wasn’t much to look at, given all the buildings that had once stood here had either been destroyed in a devastating blaze decades ago or had otherwise been demolished.

These days, Edge Creek was known only for one thing: a phantom light visible after dark, provided the visitor knock the rail line three times to summon it.

The place had once creeped the hell out of Dez. Now he looked for excuses to visit.

As he stood alongside the track, large rock in hand to bang on the track, he suddenly wasn’t sure whether his summoning would even work by day. This sort of thing was usually reserved for after dark.

If he couldn’t summon the ghost train, he couldn’t summon Jack, Flynn or Aiden. Which meant he wouldn’t be any help to Sully, Marc or Jerry.

Dez set his jaw as he crouched next to the track. Maybe it wouldn’t work, but he sure as hell would try.

He brought the rock down. Once, twice, three times. And waited.

Standing, he kept his eyes fixed on a spot south on the tracks where the light usually appeared. As expected, nothing showed.

With a frown, he squatted again. He’d come this far. He had to see it through. He lifted the rock to try again.

“Bit early for a visit.”

Dez jumped to his feet and spun. His face broke into a wide grin as he saw his dad, Aiden and Jack.

Dez immediately met the waiting hug from his family members. “Damn good to see you guys. How you doing?”

Aiden wore his typical goofy smile when Dez pulled away. “Still dead. How are you?”

Flynn got more to the point. “Where’s Sully? He’s usually with you.”

“Not this time.” Dez provided the explanation, from the start of the case to the developments with the hellhound and the curse.

By the time he finished, Jack was frowning. For Dez, it wasn’t an encouraging sign.

“I don’t know much about curses,” Jack said. “But I’ve tangled with a hellhound before. Trust me when I say this: you don’t want to go there.”

Flynn faced Jack with crossed arms. “What about Sully? He’s stronger than we are. You’ve said as much before. And he’s fought and defeated some pretty tough entities.”

“Sure, he has. This thing, though? It’s not one of those. This is something else. We’re talking demonic here, Flynn. And I mean full-on demonic. Now, I don’t know exactly what’s waiting for the souls who get sent through that other door, whether there’s a Beelzebub or anything. But something’s got to be in charge of those places on the other side. Maybe makes sense there is some sort of Satan. If there is—whatever the boss entity is—these hounds are its lapdogs. They’re imbued with all the power of full demonic entities, and they’re protected besides. If there’s a way to destroy them, I’ve never found it. Even our weapons won’t do it.
